Hair Extensions in Dartmouth: What to Expect, Which Method Is Right for You, and What It Really Costs

Posted by Lauren Arbuckle on

If you've been thinking about hair extensions and aren't sure where to start, you're not alone. Extensions are one of the most exciting services we offer at Lox, and also one of the most misunderstood. There's a lot of conflicting information out there — so let's clear it up.

Here's everything you need to know about getting hair extensions in Dartmouth.

What are hair extensions?

Hair extensions add length, fullness, or both to your natural hair. At Lox, we work exclusively with 100% premium Remy human hair — meaning the cuticles are intact and aligned, which gives you the most natural look, feel, and longevity. The result should be seamless, undetectable, and beautiful.

Which extension method is right for you?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer. The right method depends on your hair type, texture, density, lifestyle, and current hair health. That's exactly why we require an in-person consultation before booking any extension service. Here's an overview of the methods we offer at Lox:.

Genius Weft — Beaded Row Our most popular method, and for good reason. Genius Weft uses a beaded row system to attach wefts of hair horizontally across the head without glue, heat, or braiding. What sets Genius Weft apart is the construction of the weft itself — it's thin, flexible, and has no return hair (sometimes called a mustache) along the bottom edge, which means a cleaner, flatter result with zero bulk. Genius Wefts can also be cut to any width without unraveling, allowing your artist to customize the fit precisely to your head. They are also more water-resistant than hand tied wefts, making them a practical choice for active lifestyles. The result is incredible volume, length, and a seamless, natural-looking installation that's gentle on your natural hair. Move-up appointments are typically every 6 to 8 weeks. Genius Weft is a great fit for guests with medium to thick hair density who want a full, durable result they don't have to think too much about.

Hand Tied — Beaded Row Hand tied extensions use the same beaded row foundation as Genius Weft, but where Genius Weft is thin and flexible, hand tied wefts are more structured — which is exactly what makes them so precise. Sewn entirely by hand, they offer a superior level of customization for guests with fine or low-density hair, laying beautifully flat against the head with a delicate, undetectable finish. Because of their construction, hand tied wefts cannot be cut — they are fitted to your head during installation by your artist. This method is an excellent choice for anyone who wears their hair up frequently or needs something truly tailored to finer hair. Move-ups are typically every 6 to 8 weeks.

K-Tip (Keratin-Bonded Extensions) K-Tip extensions use individual strands of hair fused to your natural hair using a small keratin bond. They blend seamlessly and offer the most natural movement of any method — each strand moves independently, just like your own hair. K-Tips are ideal for guests with medium to thick hair and are one of the longest-lasting options, with move-ups typically every 3 to 5 months. They require careful home maintenance to protect the bonds.

V-Light Extensions V-Light is a newer, innovative method that uses a v-shaped connector and a specialized light tool to attach individual strands without heat, glue, or chemicals. The connection point is exceptionally small and flat, making it one of the most discreet individual strand methods available. V-Light works well for guests who want the natural movement of individual strand extensions with a gentler application process. Move-up timing is similar to K-Tips.

How much do hair extensions cost?

This is where we have to be honest with you: there's no flat price for extensions, and anyone who gives you a number without seeing your hair first is guessing.

The total investment depends on the method, how many grams or rows of hair you need, your hair's current length and density, and your desired result. At Lox, pricing includes the professional installation and is quoted separately from the cost of the hair itself — because the hair is custom-ordered to match your colour and texture precisely.

What we can tell you is that quality extensions are an investment, and they should be. Poorly installed extensions or low-quality hair can cause real damage to your natural hair. At Lox, our priority is always hair health first — we will never recommend a method your hair can't support.

Will extensions damage my hair?

When installed correctly by a trained specialist and maintained properly at home, extensions should not damage your natural hair. At Lox, we only recommend a method if your hair is a suitable candidate. If your hair needs strengthening or treatment before an install, we'll tell you — and we'll help you get there first.

How do you get started?

All new extension guests at Lox begin with an in-person consultation. During this appointment we assess your hair health, discuss your goals, recommend the right method, colour-match precisely, and give you an accurate investment quote.
